Learn how to do a wire transfer step by step, including what information you’ll need, how much it costs, and how long it
takes to arrive.

Sending a wire transfer is straightforward once you know what your bank needs. Here’s how to do it, step by step.

  1. Gather the Recipient’s Information
Full legal name, bank account number, routing number (or SWIFT/BIC code and IBAN for international transfers), and bank name and address. Double-check every number since wires are fast and generally irreversible.

  2. Confirm the Amount and Currency
For international transfers, ask your bank what exchange rate it will apply. This is often where an undisclosed markup of 2 to 5 percent hides.

  3. Choose How to Send It
Most banks support online or mobile banking, in-person at a branch, or by phone, depending on the transfer size and your bank’s policies.

  4. Submit and Pay the Fee
Domestic wires typically cost $15 to $35. International wires typically cost $35 to $50, plus the FX markup.

  5. Confirm and Track
Get a confirmation number. Domestic wires usually settle the same business day; international wires can take one to five business days.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Sending to unverified account details, missing the bank’s daily cutoff time, not asking about the
exchange rate, and assuming the transfer can be reversed once sent.
